Founder – Global Rally and Cannonball Drivers Club

Robert Hughes is the founder of Global Rally and the Cannonball Drivers Club. Robert is the driving force behind the Cannonball event concepts. With a deep passion for motorsport, navigation, and endurance challenges, Robert has spent years developing modern rally experiences that combine cutting-edge digital technology with the spirit of classic road and off road navigation events using digital navigation and roadbook.

Robert’s vision is to make the Cannonball Drivers Club accessible, safe, and rewarding, without the cost and barriers of traditional motorsport. Through Global Rally, he has pioneered the use of digital navigation, GPS-based scoring, and remote Cannonball formats, allowing drivers and navigators to take part in professionally run events on their own terms.

His focus is on precision over speed, community over competition, and creating events that people want to return to year after year.

Bill Lightstone

Event Director

Bill Lightstone brings extensive experience in event management, logistics, and participant experience to the Cannonball team. As Event Director, Bill is responsible for turning ideas into reality — ensuring that every route, schedule, and event day runs smoothly and professionally.

With a strong background in organising motorsport-style and automotive events, Bill is passionate about delivering well-structured, enjoyable, and safe experiences for all participants. He works closely with route designers, technical teams, and venues to ensure that every Cannonball event meets the highest standards.

Bill’s attention to detail and calm, methodical approach help create events that feel welcoming for first-time participants while still offering a serious challenge for experienced drivers and riders.

Tony Ferarri

Route Master and Safety Officer

Tony Ferarri brings ea vast knowledge base and experience route development and legalities as well as being the Safety Officer for all events.

With a background in health and safety, risk assessment and safety operations , Tony, is passionate about getting it right for everyone. He is also part of the Mountain Rescue Organisation and is fully first aid trained.
