How Cannonball Events Work

A simple guide to your Cannonball experience

Cannonball events are designed to give you the thrill of rally-style navigation and endurance driving — without the complexity or cost of traditional motorsport.

Whether you’re taking part in a Cannonball 200, a Cannonball 300, or progressing towards a MilleGT endurance event, the core experience follows the same simple structure.

This page explains exactly what to expect.

1. Join the Cannonball Drivers Club

All Cannonball and MilleGT events are accessed through the Cannonball Drivers Club.

Membership gives you:

  • Eligibility to enter Cannonball and MilleGT events

  • Early access to event dates and routes

  • Member-only pricing and invitations

  • Access to practice days and training content

Once you’re a member, you can choose which events you want to enter — there’s no obligation to do them all.

2. Choose Your Event

Cannonball events come in different formats and distances, including:

  • Cannonball 200 – one-day precision rally

  • Cannonball 300 – extended one-day challenge

  • Remote Rally Events – complete the route in your own time

  • MilleGT Events – multi-stage endurance challenges

Each event listing clearly explains:

  • Distance and format

  • Navigation type (digital roadbook or GPX)

  • Whether the event is date-specific or remote

  • Start location options

  • Entry fee and availability

You simply choose the event that suits your time, experience, and ambition.

3. Register & Receive Your Navigation Pack

Once registered, you’ll receive your digital event pack, which includes:

  • Access to the official navigation system

  • Instructions for setup and use

  • Event rules and scoring overview

  • Safety information and guidance

Depending on the event, navigation will be provided as:

  • A digital roadbook (rally-style navigation), or

  • A GPX-based navigation route (GPS-guided precision route)

You don’t need specialist equipment — just a smartphone or tablet and a secure mount.

4. Get Ready & Start the Event

For scheduled events:

  • Arrive at the start location

  • Check in digitally

  • Attend a short briefing

  • Start the route at your allocated time

For remote rally events:

  • Start from the designated start point

  • Begin the route whenever it suits you within the open event window

In all cases, your route is:

  • Fully legal

  • Tarmac-based

  • Carefully designed for driving enjoyment, not speed

5. Navigate the Route

During the event, you’ll follow the official navigation using the supplied system.

Your challenge is to:

  • Follow the route accurately

  • Hit all required waypoints

  • Respect speed-controlled zones

  • Drive smoothly, consistently, and legally

This is not a race.
There’s no advantage to driving fast — accuracy and discipline are what matter.

6. GPS Tracking, Safety & Scoring

Every Cannonball event uses GPS tracking to support:

Safety

  • Your progress is logged throughout the route

  • Tracking allows organisers to monitor completion

  • Support can be coordinated if required

Scoring

Your GPS data is used to:

  • Confirm waypoints

  • Monitor compliance with speed zones

  • Calculate penalties (if any)

  • Produce accurate, verified results

Everything is automated — no paperwork, no guesswork.

7. Finish & Results

Once you complete the route:

  • Your data uploads automatically

  • Your result is processed by the system

  • You appear on the official Cannonball leaderboard

Results are based on:

  • Navigation accuracy

  • Waypoint completion

  • Penalty minimisation

The most successful participants are those who complete the route with the fewest penalties.

8. Awards, Recognition & Leaderboards

All finishers earn recognition as official Cannonball participants.

Depending on the event, this may include:

  • Finisher medals

  • Top-placing awards

  • Zero Hero Award for penalty-free runs

  • Inclusion on the national leaderboard

Leaderboards allow you to:

  • Compare yourself against other drivers and riders

  • Track improvement across multiple events

  • Build a personal Cannonball record over time

9. Progression & What’s Next

Many participants start with a Cannonball 200 and then progress to:

  • Longer Cannonball routes

  • Seasonal challenges

  • MilleGT endurance events

The system is designed to reward consistency and commitment — not just one-off performances.

In Summary

Cannonball events are:

  • Precision-based, not speed-based

  • Technology-led, not paperwork-heavy

  • Flexible, accessible, and professionally run

  • Built around real roads and real driving enjoyment

If you enjoy driving or riding and want a challenge that rewards focus, skill, and navigation — you’ll feel right at home.
